SHMS Inaugural IPE Symposium
Start Date: 4/9/2013Start Time: 5:30 PM
End Date: 4/9/2013End Time: 7:30 PM

Event Description:
The School of Health and Medical Sciences (SHMS) is embarking upon a major strategic initiative related to Inter-Professional Education (IPE). The premise of IPE is to bring together students from different professions to learn about, learn from, and learn with each other -- leading to effective collaboration and, ultimately, improved health outcomes for our patients and communities.

SHMS' inaugural IPE Symposium on Tuesday, April 9, is the School's kickoff event to officially introduce IPE into the curriculum. Certain SHMS student cohorts are required to attend and have been notified by the Dean and their department chairs. Participation by other members of the SHMS community (i.e. alumni, clinical site supervisors) is welcome with advanced notice. Contact SHMS IPE Task Force chair Genevieve Zipp, PT, Ed.D., for more information: genevieve.zipp@shu.edu, (973) 275-2457.

Symposium Format:

Opening session: Video case presentation by a clinician from the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, a SHMS clinical partner organization. The case will center around Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).

Breakout Sessions: Participant groups will collaborate on a problem-based learning (PBL) exercise regarding the TBI case with faculty mentorship.

Panel Discussion: Professional experts from all five professions (Athletic Training, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant, Speech-Language Pathology) will briefly present their main conclusions and recommendations regarding the PBL exercise associated with the TBI case. An open format question-and-answer period will follow.

Breakout sessions: Participants will conclude by discussing briefly what they have learned as a result of this collaborative IPE experience.

Dinner buffet and registration begin at 5 p.m.
